Alba’s Voice
Alba Terminel de Arce was born into the lively city of Hermosillo, Sonora on April 27, 1946, her beginnings as modest as the humble shoebox that cradled her. Her mother, Maria Manuela Terminel—affectionately known as Nela—was a paragon of resilience and determination. In pursuit of a future brimming with opportunity, Nela and young Alba relocated to the vibrant Tijuana in Baja California Norte in the 1950s. Despite Alba’s aspirations for education, she entered the workforce early to support her family, cultivating a robust work ethic.
Throughout her childhood, Alba held her elder siblings in high regard, particularly Amanda, who played an instrumental role during those formative years. The move to Tijuana was a hopeful venture, with little more than their possessions upon their backs. As Alba matured, her beauty and charisma drew many admirers, but it was the charm of Gabriel H. Arce that captured her heart. Their marriage in 1968 marked the beginning of their life together in Los Angeles, where they welcomed children Gabriel, Humberto, and Aide.
One of my most cherished memories is witnessing her at 25, embarking on a new chapter with my father, the steadfast support of our family. Her spirit and optimism were contagious, leaving an indelible mark on me. Thanksgiving was particularly special, a time when we united to express our gratitude, despite our playful insistence that “Mexicans don’t do this,” savoring the togetherness and familial warmth.
Alba’s transition into a dedicated homemaker was natural; she fostered a home environment rich with love, laughter, and selflessness. Her compassion reached beyond our immediate circle, as she often cared for her nieces and nephews who joyously welcomed her with chants of “Aviene Alba, Aviene Alba.”
The year 1990 marked a poignant shift as Alba faced widowhood with dignity. Once celebrated as La Señora Arce, the tides of fate slowly diminished the respect she commanded. Embracing the role of caregiver for her mother, Alba encountered financial and emotional hardships, ultimately requiring additional support to manage her mother’s needs.
Alba’s giving nature endured despite these adversities. She took up housecleaning to support herself, generously offering her services to friends and family. Tragically, her trusting nature was taken advantage of, culminating in the loss of her beloved home to a Ponzi scheme by those she trusted. Yet, her resilience never wavered.
As the years progressed, Alba found herself increasingly sidelined, her once revered matriarchal status reduced to hushed conversations and sidelong glances. Fighting against the creeping sense of invisibility, she strove for recognition. The challenges she faced, including the impact of the Ponzi scheme and the loss of her home, marked a difficult transition. Watching her endure these final years was heart-wrenching.
Alba passed away on April 6, 2023. In her last moments, her daughter-in-law was by her side, offering solace as she departed from this world. Her passing was a sobering reminder that Alba’s struggle to be heard is a plight shared by many who remain voiceless.
Motivated by Alba’s relentless spirit of generosity and resilience, AUMER (Alba Union for Migrant and Elder Rights) was established. AUMER stands as a legacy to Alba’s life, advocating for those who have been silenced and marginalized. It is a mission driven by compassion, a belief in fundamental rights, and a dedication to ensuring that each voice is heard and valued.
Alba’s life story, woven with love, challenges, and a steadfast spirit of giving, continues to inspire and direct AUMER. Her legacy persists, reflected in the organization’s initiatives and advocacy, amplifying the voices of the marginalized across the globe.
AUMER has become a beacon of hope and a champion for the indomitable spirits like Alba, whose lives are often overshadowed by neglect and apathy. With Alba’s memory as its foundation, AUMER stands resolute against indifference, advocating for justice, dignity, and recognition. Alba’s departure sparked the beginning of a resolute mission, igniting a movement of love, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the inherent rights of the vulnerable.
As Alba’s story transcends the temporal realm, her legacy is lovingly carried forward through AUMER. Her essence continues to inspire, fostering hope, empathy, and justice, and ensuring that the whispers of the marginalized crescendo into a symphony of change, echoing through time. At the heart of AUMER lies a commitment to uphold the fundamental rights of individuals—rights that are inalienable and divine.
